Choice and Decision

The journey to liberation from bondage to crack cocaine begins with a "choice,” then a “decision.” That choice can be as simple as waking up one day and telling yourself, "I' choose to be crack free instead of continuing to use crack." The hard part is making the decision to follow through with that choice. There is a difference between a “choice” and a “decision.” A choice can be made once and for all, but a decision may need to be made over and over until it becomes absolute. Making a “choice” means that you have chosen one thing over another. (I want eggs for breakfast instead of cereal). The decision part comes when you actually eat the eggs instead of the cereal.

In other words, you can’t make a firm decision on anything until you have made a choice to choose one thing over another. Therefore, if you wake up and make the choice to be crack free instead of using crack, you need to follow through by making a decision to honor that choice no matter what. This decision may have to be made every day, every hour, and even every second if that is what it takes. It took me a long time to realize that although I “wanted” to stop using crack and I often made the choice that I wasn’t going to use anymore, I continued to go back out and use over and over because I had not truly made a “decision” in my heart to make that choice absolute and forever.
